Free STEM Activity for 5th-8th Graders

Young Scholars Circle hosted a free STEM activity for all 5th-8th graders interested in building and racing a solar car. The Northern Virginia Junior Solar Sprint took place. All interested — 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students — were encouraged to participate.

Design and Build a Solar Car

Young Scholars Circle has offered a workshop for students interested in learning how to build and design a solar car last Sept 4th. In addition to building and designing the car, participants learned the science behind the process.

This fun event had a number of benefits for students. It encouraged interest and enthusiasm for the STEM fields, stimulated critical thinking, provided experience with the learning process preferred by the TJ admission committee, and it allowed students to create their own unique designs.

Importance of STEM

STEM is everywhere and it has a big impact on all of our lives. STEM is also vital for the future of our children. Most employers report that they prefer a degree in the STEM fields.

Although interest in STEM is important at any age, it can be particularly meaningful during the middle school years. This is the age when many students begin to consider potential career options. The opinions they develop now about STEM subjects will carry through to their high school years and beyond, impacting their future decisions.

Unfortunately, many middle school teachers are not prepared to provide relevant and informative STEM learning opportunities. Events such as the Junior Solar Sprint provide an excellent opportunity for middle school students to develop an interest in the STEM fields.
