My Science Video Game by Young Scholars Circle
Science Exploration, Research, and Video Game Design in One!
Science education can be improved by incorporating key features of games that influence motivation, cognition, and metacognition. Games may serve as a useful cultural tool through which instruction can effectively make use of existing capacities (Greenfield, 1994)
- Design a video game about any Science topic of your choice.
- Stimulate creativity and critical thinking skills.
- Enrich reading, writing & research skills.
- Ignite Computer Science interest.
- Student handbook and app subscription included!
Possible Topic 1: Ecosystems
An ecosystem is a community of beings interacting with living and nonliving things in an environment. Students may design a balanced virtual ecosystem where an organism can thrive. Students identify one organism that travels through its atmosphere, seeking the elements needed to maintain life while avoiding factors that cause harm.
Possible Topic 2: Journey Through a Cell
Your hero is super tiny. Microscopic! How else could they make their way through a plant or animal cell? Build a game where this mini-hero learns about the parts of a cell as they search for a way out. Students sketch out their cell and include each feature on the note cards. Students use this information to help design the pixel art for the game. The cell parts and functions will also drive what their mini-hero collects and the hazards they might face.
Possible Topic 3: Space Explorer
Your hero is a space explorer from another galaxy. Their mission is to visit our universe and learn about the planets that make up our solar system. Your explorer will encounter enemies and hazards that will complicate this journey. However, they will receive some support through power-ups and collectible items.
