SCAT
What is a SCAT prep course?
SCAT prep course is an opportunity for your child to prepare and be familiar with the SCAT test given by John Hopkins University. It gives the opportunity to enhance their reasoning, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
What do we do?
- Highly individualized small group instruction.
- Focusing on the content, test format, test language, accuracy, and speed.
- Assessment: For us to help your child prepare for SCAT, an assessment is initially done. The assessment provides us with the present level skills of your child in verbal and mathematical reasoning. It serves as our guide in designing a specific program for your child.
- Length of Class: The class usually last for 3 months depending on the child’s needs and progress within the sessions. It is usually small group of 2-3 students maximum.
- Sessions: The students will be given timed practice test (verbal analogy and math) every session. After the practice test, teacher will check and discuss the results with the students, specifically the incorrect responses and re-teach the skill.
- Feedback: The result and performance of students will be discussed to parents after every session. Homework is also given to child to re-enforce and review the skills learned, in every session.
SCAT Primary Contents Grades 2 to 4:
Verbal – measure the child’s ability to understand the meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability. In this area we help your child practice their skill in completing verbal analogy questions.
Verbal Strategies:
- Help the students determine the relationship between the first pair of words.
- Teach the strategy of eliminating from the choices the pair words that don’t have the same relationship as the first pair.
- Teach the students to justify their answers.
Quantitative – measure students understanding of number operations. In this area we teach your child how to approach the targeted math skills given in the SCAT test.
SCAT Grades 5 to 6:
Verbal – measure the child’s ability to understand the meaning of words and verbal reasoning ability. In this area we help your child practice their skill in completing verbal analogy questions.
Verbal Strategies:
- Help the students determine the relationship between the first pair of words
- Teach the strategy of eliminating from the choices the pair words that don’t have the same relationship as the first pair
- Teach the students to justify their answers
Quantitative Section:
This section measures a student’s understanding of fundamental number operations. The questions are multiple-choice mathematical comparisons, which require a student to compare two mathematical quantities, and determine which is greater. The problems are intended to measure mathematical reasoning ability, and often do not require computation. The quantitative section of SCAT has 55 questions, and the student will be given 22 minutes to complete them.
Course Objectives: numbers, number sense, computations, measurements, and geometry
Number, Number Sense, and Computations:
- Describe, compare, identify, and investigate fractions, decimals, integers, percentages, exponents, and ratios
- Compute the greatest common factors, least common multiples, and factors
- Solve one and two step inequalities and equations
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers, fractions, and decimals
- Evaluate algebraic expressions
- Identify mathematical properties (Distributive property, Identity property, etc.)
Measurements and Geometry:
- Determine the circumference and area of circles
- Determine perimeter and area of squares, rectangles, and triangles
- Working with coordinate planes, ordered pairs, and quadrants
